About Newark Northern Bowls Club
Newark Northern Bowls Club was established in 1926 and is currently home to over 40 members actively participating in the sport of lawn bowls. The club’s outdoor green operates throughout the summer season, from April to September, providing a well-maintained and welcoming environment for both recreational and competitive play.
The club has cultivated a progressive and forward-looking atmosphere, successfully balancing youthful enthusiasm with experienced leadership. The dedication of past and present county players has been instrumental in mentoring emerging talent, resulting in the development of national prize winners and county champions on numerous occasions.
We have social events at the club house, from quiz nights to coffee mornings.
History of Newark Northern Bowls Club
The Early Years
Newark Northern Bowls Club was established in 1926, originally located behind The Northern public house on Appleton gate (formerly The Railway Inn). From its inception, the club attracted many of Newark’s leading bowlers, several of whom went on to achieve notable distinctions and accolades within the sport.
In 1990, the brewery owners of the premises decided to sell the site, which included the bowling green. The club subsequently negotiated a lease with the developer of the newly constructed Newark Indoor Bowls Centre, who had provided an outdoor green to encourage summer participation. However, the annual rental of £600, coupled with subsequent increases, proved financially challenging. As a result, the club began to explore alternative long-term arrangements.
Following extensive discussions with the local council regarding the condition and maintenance of existing municipal greens, the club proposed a mutually beneficial lease agreement. Under this arrangement, the club assumed responsibility for both Sherwood Avenue Park Green and the London Road Green, thereby securing improved facilities for the wider bowling community.
At the time of acquisition, Sherwood Avenue Green required significant redevelopment. The site comprised four full rinks and two shortened rinks with rounded corners, reflecting its former use as a crown green. A structured improvement programme was implemented under the supervision of the club’s appointed greenkeeper to restore and enhance the playing surface to a high competitive standard. The resulting transformation has established a facility that is widely appreciated by both members and visiting teams.
In 2006, with the support of a grant secured in partnership with the local district council, a new pavilion was constructed. The pavilion was officially opened on Presidents Day by Mr. Richard Alexander, then Chairman of Newark & Sherwood District Council.
Present Day
Today, through continued commitment, investment, and collaboration within the community, the club maintains a bowling green and facilities of which it is justifiably proud. Visiting bowlers and prospective members are warmly invited to come along, see the quality of the facilities first-hand, and experience the friendly, welcoming atmosphere the club has worked hard to create.
Newark Northern is also proud to be the home of Bowls Nottinghamshire and hosts county matches and county finals.
